FENDI Cruise 2015 Collection

On Fendi’s fall '14/15 catwalk, Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi sparked, probably unbeknownst to them at the time, what would become something of a live wire in terms of seasonal talking points: the orchid-sprig brooch. Many including this writer originally thought the flowers might have been fabric or even porcelain, but, as it turns out, they were real, freshly clipped and pinned along those sumptuous fur bombers. So buzzy were the blooms, the duo decided to typify them for resort via silkscreens, threaded embroideries on a cloud-soft mohair tank, or black leather pins offset with vaguely Hirst-ish polka dots in spiced pink and sea blue. Much like their recent monster-mash hits (you know, those mink pom-poms and Peekaboos with menacing cartoon eyes), it was delightful to see Lagerfeld and Fendi’s continued and sharp-as-ever imagination at work.

Apropos of that, there was an overarching mix of street grandeur here, much of it interlaced with a desirable anachronism that felt as old-timey Italian as it did modern-day globetrotter (to note: Fendi has made a concerted effort of late to market its Roman heritage). A leather jacket’s checkered-flag torso gave off a retro Gran Premio di Roma vibe, while a graffiti scrawl revived from a 1988 print used on a scarf seemed totally current when appliquéd in silk down a mesh-trimmed T-shirt and cuffed pants. Resort also sees the launch of a new Baguette bag, a functional (added pockets) yet still classic take on the label’s famed bestseller. Through it, Fendi’s technical mastery provided a stylish athleticism; each of these pieces was cut to move, and move fast, suggesting that ultraluxe sportiness is indeed becoming a house hallmark.

'Fur Escapes by FENDI Fall/Winter 2014/15'
The Fendi show opened with a playful touch: Cara Delevingne swishing down the runway in a shapely charcoal wool dress (with the collection’s graphic round shoulder) and a black fox hood, swinging a furry keychain that, on closer inspection, turned out to be a mini Karl Lagerfeld doll fashioned from tufts of fur surely any self-respecting: Bag Boy Karlito, Karl Lagerfeld's funny and fuzzy lookalike!
